Since 2020, 0.04% of Ethereum validators have been slashed

Since the launch of the deposit contract in Beacon Chain in 2020, 226 validators have experienced slashing, 75 of them were in this status at once in February 2021. Similar data was provided by the main Ethereum developer under the nickname superphiz.

“That’s not something worth losing sleep over” – explained the specialist.

According to a blockchain observer, Beacon Chain currently has work 524,409 validators.

Slashing (penalties) are imposed on violators of the Proof-of-Stake consensus during the “attestation” or “offer”. It can take the form of forfeiting some of the ETH staked and (often) excluding those who can be rewarded for their work.

An “attestation” violation occurs when a validator tries to change the history of a block or validate two candidates for the same block (“double votes”). These violations are the most common statistics.

An “offer” violation occurs when a validator proposes and signs two different blocks for the same slot.

superphiz shared four tips for avoiding slashes:

  • delete any existing network data on old machines with reinstallation and reformatting;
  • use “clone” detection – check if the validator keys are active before starting the validation process (this may affect the uptime parameter, but will give a better chance of not getting slashed);
  • create and follow a checklist, generate 15-minute “observation” buffers through an appropriate journal and blockchain explorer to be aware of potential issues;
  • if something doesn’t seem right, it’s best to “turn everything off” and “come back” when the problem shows up and a solution is worked out.

At the moment, users have blocked 16.78 million ETH or 13.93% of the total supply of the second largest cryptocurrency by capitalization.

Tentatively in March 2023, Ethereum is waiting for an important upgrade – Shanghai. The upcoming update will allow users to withdraw ETH from the Beacon Chain deposit contract and includes a number of system improvements.

As a reminder, on February 28, the Shanghai-Capella (Shapella) update will be rolled out to the Sepolia testnet.

Earlier, Binance Research experts calculated that only 31% of Ethereum stakers are “in the black” relative to the current market quotes.
