Bitcoin white paper found on macOS

A copy of the Bitcoin Whitepaper has been found on macOS. A PDF file of a document called “Bitcoin: a decentralized electronic monetary system” was discovered by programmer and blogger Andy Baio.

How to find a document?

If you are on a Mac, open a Terminal and enter the following command (you will need to enter a password): sudo open /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/VirtualScanner.app/Contents/Resources/simpledoc.pdf

If you have macOS 10.14 or later, the PDF should open in Preview right away.

You can also open the Finder and click Macintosh HD, then open the System – Library – Image Capture – Devices folder. Control-click VirtualScanner.app and “Show Package Contents”, open the Contents – Resources folder, then open simpledoc.pdf.

The technical documentation of the first cryptocurrency is available in all versions of macOS, from Mojave (10.14) 2018 to the current version of Ventura (13.3), but not in High Sierra (10.13) and earlier versions.

Why does macOS need technical documentation?

The Image Capture utility uses the bitcoin whitepaper as a reference for a device called Virtual Scanner II, which is either hidden or not installed for everyone by default. It is not clear why it is hidden for some and what exactly it is used for, presumably it can activate the “Import from iPhone” feature.

Experts believe that this is just a convenient multi-page PDF file that is suitable for testing. And ordinary users of the operating system will most likely never see it.

The reaction of the crypto community

Cryptons were very happy when it was reported that the popular operating system contains a document dedicated to their favorite cryptocurrency.

The head of the largest crypto exchange Binance, Changpeng Zhao, expressed the general opinion:

Who is the guy who put bitcoin white paper on every Mac? I want to personally buy him a drink.
