Amid the ban on ChatGPT in Italy, a number of European regulators are considering blocking the chatbot in their countries. Reuters writes about it.
German data protection and freedom of information commissioner Ulrich Kelber said the government could suspend the tool. This will happen if the authorities decide to check the compliance of the chatbot with the GDPR.
Regulators in France and Ireland said they were closely following Italy’s investigation.
Regulators in Spain have said they have not received a formal complaint against ChatGPT. The authorities may launch their own investigation in the future if the need arises.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has also issued a warning against using personal data to develop chatbots. The ministry also expressed concerns about the quality of training datasets.
In his publication, he referred to the decision of the Italian regulator and an open letter signed by more than 1,000 industry experts.
However, Sweden has no plans to ban the software and has not asked the GDPD for any guidance.
Legal experts believe that pressure on ChatGPT could affect other chatbots like Google Bard or Microsoft Bing.
In addition, the actions of the regulators were criticized by some European politicians. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matthew Salvini called his regulator’s decision “excessive”. A German government spokesman said there was no need to ban ChatGPT.
In March, the Italian regulator ordered the blocking of ChatGPT for “illegal collection of personal data.”
That same month, a technology ethics panel called on the US Federal Trade Commission to investigate OpenAI.
