A man has been arrested in China for posting and spreading fake news generated by the popular ChatGPT chatbot. It is reported by the local newspaper South China Morning Post (SCMP) with reference to information received from the police.
The man used ChatGPT to create a news item with elements collected from various popular news items. Fake news about a train accident in the Chinese province of Gansu, which allegedly occurred on April 25, also reported the death of nine people.
The news article was posted by at least 20 Baijiahao social media accounts. Before the material caught the attention of law enforcement, it had been read more than 15,000 times.
Police said the detainee, surnamed Hong, who is believed to be from a marketing company registered in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, “used artificial intelligence technology to fabricate false information.”
In January, China came into force with regulations regarding the use of deepfake technology. The document prohibits the use of artificially created voices and videos, manipulation of faces or gestures (the bill classifies them as “deep synthesis”) in any applications that can harm public order, infringe on individual rights, spread false news, or “illustrate sexual activity.”
Videos and photos created using deep synthesis technology, commonly known as deepfake, must be flagged so as not to cause public concern. The case of the arrest for fake news about the train crash was the first since the passage of the law.
