Graphics chip manufacturer NVIDIA has long been torn between the interests of gamers and cryptocurrency miners. But now there is another area of application for its products – artificial intelligence technologies and now popular neural networks.
CTO Michael Kagan said that cryptocurrencies “do not bring anything useful to society,” and the company hopes that its products will be used in the field of artificial intelligence, for example, for the chatbot ChatGPT, reports edition of the Guardian.
Kagan called digital currencies garbage and explained that you can sell video cards to miners, but not support them: “I never believed that [криптовалюты] is something that will do something good for humanity. You see, people do crazy things, but at the same time they buy your products and you sell them. This does not mean that the company is focused on supporting this.”
In 2021, NVIDIA has taken the side of gamers in a more lucrative and less demanding market. In May 2021, it was announced that the RTX 3000 line of graphics cards will cap hashrate to make graphics chips less attractive to cryptocurrency miners.
The updated Lite Hash Rate (LHR) line of RTX 3000 graphics cards reduced the power of the device by 50% when mining Ethereum (then this cryptocurrency could still be mined). However, the miners were able to overcome the restrictions and continued to earn on the company’s products.
The long-awaited merger of Ethereum, as a result of which the consensus algorithm changed from Proof-of-work to Proof-of-stake, pleased gamers and upset miners. Video cards in Russia by October, 2022 fell in price five times in comparison with March of the same year. The price of some expensive video card models dropped from 500,000 rubles to 100,000 rubles in seven months. It’s not surprising that NVIDIA is looking for another, more promising market.
