Russian pensioners will have access to the digital ruble in April

The digital ruble, a new form of money being developed by the Central Bank of Russia, is planned, among other things, for the payment of pension accruals. Already in April, some Russian pensioners will be able to apply for digital pensions, they write “News”. The use of digital rubles will not be massive; special accounts will be created to pay pensions in digital rubles.

Clients of not all banks will be able to indulge in digital rubles. As previously reported, only 13 large banks were allowed to test, including Sberbank, VTB, Alfa-Bank, Tinkoff Bank, Gazprombank, Promsvyazbank and Rosbank.

The use of the digital ruble will not affect the amount of pension received. The amount of payments will be equivalent to a regular pension. It will be easy to spend them.

The digital pension will differ from the usual one only in the form of currency. It will take from three to five years to completely transfer pension accruals to a new form of money. All this time, pensioners will be able to choose the form of the ruble that they like best. The Central Bank plans that in the future it will also be possible to pay salaries in digital rubles.

A digital ruble is a unique code that is stored on a special electronic wallet. After full implementation, digital money can be easily transferred from one form to another, any bank where the user has an account can be used for transactions. Russians will be able to pay with the digital ruble both online and offline.

Digital rubles are similar to non-cash ones in that they are not stored in a wallet, but on a separate digital wallet. But there is a similarity with cash – in that they are issued directly by the Bank of Russia.

The main difference is that commercial banks will not have access to citizens’ digital funds, all accounts will be stored on the servers of the Central Bank. That is, digital rubles represent an obligation to the client not of the bank, but directly of the state, they will be paid regardless of what happens to this or that financial institution, the Central Bank explains.
