US law enforcement controls more than 205,000 bitcoins

A Dune Analytics study states that more than 205,000 bitcoins are under the control of US law enforcement. That is, the US authorities control just over 1% of the total BTC supply, worth just over $5.734 billion.

According to the latest data, the largest public holders of the cryptocurrency MicroStrategy and Tesla control 132,500 BTC and 10,725 BTC.

Until the beginning of March 2023, the US authorities held 215,000 bitcoins, but then they sold 9,860 coins through the Coinbase exchange. Law enforcement officers have been seizing digital currency from hackers and criminal communities over the past few years.

The seizure of 69,369 bitcoins from a cybercriminal associated with the Silk Road market was a major one.

The largest was the seizure of 94,636 BTC associated with the hacking of the Bitfinex crypto exchange in 2016. As part of the investigation of this case, Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan were arrested. They were able to legalize 119,754 BTC within five years.
