AI pilot defeats a human in dogfight

Chinese military researchers conducted a one-on-one battle between AI controlled and human drones in real conditions. Writes about it SCMP.

Two small UAVs participated in the air battle. One was controlled by artificial intelligence. It was based on the Nvidia Jetson TX2 accelerator.

The second drone was remotely controlled by an experienced pilot.

According to the document, the machine with artificial intelligence showed “superior performance” in close range combat. Also, the AI drone kept the enemy at a constant loss.

According to the study, an autonomous UAV quickly dodged a controlled drone and landed on the enemy’s tail. All attempts of a person to get rid of the persecution were unsuccessful.

The experiment had to end 90 seconds after the start.

The project was led by Huang Juntao, a professor from the Research Institute of the People’s Liberation Army of China. The agency develops and tests futuristic weapons technology.

“Aircraft with autonomous decision-making capabilities could completely outperform humans in reaction speed,” Huang said in the paper.

According to the researchers, when making sharp turns, the car also did not have to take into account human shortcomings. Among them is the outflow of blood from the brain due to excessive gravitational pull or fear of injury.

“Thanks to its superior computing power, it can more accurately predict the development of the battle in order to seize the initiative in the confrontation,” Huang’s team said.

The researchers noted that it is much more difficult to lift AI into the sky than to launch it on the ground. Limited computing resources can seriously reduce the performance of an AI pilot.

Earlier, American engineers talked about the world’s first 17-hour flight of an AI-powered training transport fighter at the controls.

Recall that in February, the US Army signed a contract with RealNetworks to equip small autonomous UAVs with a facial recognition system.

In December 2022, a video appeared on social media of a Chinese drone transporting a four-legged robops equipped with a weapon mount.
