Since 2020, the US Department of Justice has confiscated about 215,000 BTC affiliated with criminal activity. Among them:
- 69,370 BTC associated with the Silk Road darknet marketplace (November 2020);
- 94,643 BTC from the couple involved in the Bitfinex hack (January 2022);
- 51,326 BTC from Silk Road hacker James June (November 2022).
Dune notes that this is an “underestimate” based on publicly available information.
Earlier, the analytical company PeckShield recorded the movement of 48,998 BTC from US government wallets. 30,174 BTC and 8999 BTC went to two new addresses, and another 9825 BTC was sent to the American cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.
Recall that in March 2023, the authorities of Germany and the United States, with the participation of other countries, turned off the infrastructure of the ChipMixer cryptocurrency mixer and confiscated 1909.4 BTC.
